Analyzing data from different proxy types is one of the central goals of the PalaeOpen Action. This training school will equip participants with the techniques needed to effectively analyse different datasets. Moreover, it will ensure participation of a large part of the community in this endeavour and will provide different analytical and training capacities using various softwares. Training will be provided in numerical techniques by Gavin Simpson, a leading scientist in analysing palaeoecological data and member of the Action. Additional training will be provided by Action members on the software Tilia with the Neotoma database.
Outcome: Participants will have improved their ability to query Neotoma and use dedicated numerical analysis in R to analyse their and other datasets. The meeting will attract participants from different proxy groups and interactions will lead to a better understanding of the limitations and possibilities of the different proxy types. Ultimately, this training will enable the cross proxy analysis that this Action is aiming for.
Objectives
The aims of the training school are to: * Equip participants with up-to-date quantitative methods to analyze complex and disparate paleoecological datasets * Train participants in data stewardship tools, methodologies, and best practices * Foster new interactions and collaborations among palaeo-communities
Model courses
- Quantitative paleoecological analyses – by guest teacher Gavin Simpson (Aarhus University, Denmark)
- Introduction to Neotoma – by Action’s core group members Thomas Giesecke (Utrecht University, the Netherlands), Walter Finsinger (ISEM Montpellier, France) and Xavier Benito (IRTA, Spain)
- Tilia sessions to train future data stewards and data formatting for different proxy types - by Walter Finsinger (ISEM Montpellier, France), Xavier Benito (IRTA, Spain) and Thomas Giesecke (Utrecht University, the Netherlands)
